Their research, published in the Journal of Personality, found that people who score high on these four dimensions report greater well-being, higher self-esteem, and more satisfying relationships. Importantly, authenticity was predictive of mental health even after controlling for personality traits like neuroticism and extraversion.

What makes authenticity particularly complex is that we all exist in social contexts that sometimes reward inauthenticity. The workplace may demand emotional suppression. Family systems may punish deviation from expected roles. Social media incentivizes curated versions of self. Cultural norms may conflict with personal values. In this environment, maintaining authenticity is not passive. It is an active, ongoing negotiation between your inner world and external pressures.
