What's Your Dominant Thinking Bias?
You like to think you are a rational person. You weigh evidence, consider options, and make logical choices. But decades of research in cognitive psychology and behavioral economics tell a very different story. Your brain is running on mental shortcuts — called heuristics — that distort your judgment in systematic, predictable ways. These distortions are known as cognitive biases, and every single human being on the planet is subject to them. The question is not whether you have a dominant thinking bias. The question is which one runs the show.
The scientific study of cognitive biases was pioneered by psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in the early 1970s. Their groundbreaking research program, which began with a series of elegant experiments at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, revealed that human beings do not process information like rational calculating machines. Instead, we rely on a set of mental shortcuts — heuristics — that work well enough most of the time but lead to systematic errors in predictable situations. Their 1974 paper "Judgment Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases," published in the journal Science, is one of the most cited papers in the history of psychology and effectively launched the field of behavioral economics. Kahneman went on to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002 for this work, and his bestselling book "Thinking, Fast and Slow" brought these ideas to millions of readers worldwide.
The implications of their research are staggering. Confirmation bias — the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information that confirms your pre-existing beliefs — has been documented in contexts ranging from criminal investigations to medical diagnoses to political polarization. A landmark study by Nickerson (1998), published in the Review of General Psychology, described confirmation bias as "perhaps the best known and most widely accepted notion of inferential error" in the history of cognitive science. Anchoring bias, first demonstrated by Tversky and Kahneman in 1974, shows that people are disproportionately influenced by the first number or piece of information they encounter, even when that initial anchor is completely arbitrary. Availability bias, identified in the same research program, reveals that people judge the probability of events based on how easily examples come to mind — which is why people tend to vastly overestimate the likelihood of dramatic events like plane crashes while underestimating the risk of far more common threats like heart disease. And optimism bias, extensively studied by neuroscientist Tali Sharot at University College London, shows that roughly 80 percent of people systematically overestimate the likelihood of positive events happening to them and underestimate negative ones — a tendency that persists even when people are given accurate statistical information.
